About Us
Latokartano Comprehensive School is situated in Viikki area, approximately ten kilometres from Helsinki city centre. There are over eight hundred pupils in grades one to nine, aged between 7 and 16. The staff consists of the head teacher, a deputy-head, 60 full-time teachers, of which 5 are special need education teachers, school assistants and a study counsellor. The student welfare staff collaborates with the rest of the staff on a daily basis. This group consists of a social worker, a psychologist and two nurses. Our school's population is culturally diverse and we are a bilingual school (Finnish-Estonian).
Latokartano Comprehensive is a member of Unesco-ASP network, which means that the values of Unesco affects our school curriculum and everyday actions. Being a Green Flag school, the pupils and the staff recycle avidly and environmental awareness is one of the core values of the school’s curriculum. Besides the cultural and environmental involvements, we also actively participate in a national programme named School On the Move. It is a national action programme aiming to establish a physically active culture in Finnish comprehensive schools. Schools and municipalities participating in the programme implement their own individual plans to increase physical activity during the school day. Run by the Finnish government, the programme mainly aims at ensuring one hour of physical activity each day for young people. Thanks to its location, our school offers limitless opportunities for pupils to practice a wide range of supports, not only in PE lesson, but also in their free time. With School On the Move programme, the staff has also provided a variety of activities that can be carried out in almost every academic field, such as studying Maths on a hop-scotch grid or doing a foreign-language activity while doing indoor climbing. Furthermore, we have been involved in four school partnerships over the past six years. One of the main themes of the current partnership also includes health and well-being. The final product of this partnership will be to create an app that encourages and motivates pupils to be more active in their daily lives. We believe that being part of Health for a Budget project will be complementary to our current partnership and carry this very important theme to the next level.
